OUR WOMEN:
Globalization has been hard for the women of Zulu villages . The changing demands of our global community have forced them to reconsider the ways they survive. The women have been forced to find ways to support their families and villages.
30 years ago, a co-op was formed with a goal of helping these women and their families become financially self-sufficient. Today, there are over 2000 people in the co-op. Although the co-op was designed for everyone, regardless of gender, a large majority are women.
The co-op has allowed the women to combine their work with their traditional lifestyle by transforming their handicrafts into a primary source of income. It also serves to revitalize the vanishing age-old Zulu tradition of basketry and beadwork , as it has helped to guarantee that the craft continues to get passed down from generation to generation. Every item purchased contributes towards the preservation of the Zulu culture.
